As the editor of a magazine dedicated to historical weapons and their history from around the world—and with the understanding that we must learn from this very history and its witnesses, the tools of restriction and destruction of human life—I would like to take this moment, in light of the current state of global politics, to make it clear that The Gladiological and the people behind it firmly advocate for peaceful solutions to conflicts that involve all parties.

This no longer seems to be a given. And even though this project is meant to remain apolitical, I believe it is important to clarify: being apolitical does not mean giving silent approval. It appears we are living in a time of great change, and now more than ever, it is crucial to uphold and openly demonstrate humanity and common sense—each of us, everywhere.

Political neutrality does not mean accepting contempt for human life, imperialism, and hatred as legitimate political agendas. These are not beliefs but rather tools for egocentric, greedy, and deeply wounded individuals and groups.

As students of history, and specifically of the tools designed to harm human beings, we must be fully aware of what the use of weapons leads to. What now gathers dust on many walls was once stained with the blood of fathers, and sometimes even mothers and children. Every one of us knows this, yet we too often forget it when captivated by the aesthetics and technical refinements that some swords possess.

At times, it may no longer be clear who is the aggressor and who is the defender. But in any case, I believe weapons belong on the wall—as a warning, reminding us of what our ancestors sought to caution us against.

“The peace is not simply the absence of war, but the work of justice.”
Pope John Paul II
